Guide to Genealogical Research in Lazio: Archives, Historical Borders, Province Changes, and Territorial Variations
Genealogical research in Lazio offers an extraordinary wealth of documentation, tied to the complex historical evolution of the region, long divided among the Papal States, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Terra di Lavoro), Umbria, and Abruzzo. To correctly trace the birth, marriage, and death records of your ancestors, it is essential to understand the major territorial reorganizations, municipality suppressions, name changes, and transfers between provinces and regions that occurred over time.
- Napoleonic Civil Status (1809–1814/1815): Introduced during French rule in the departments of the Papal States (Rome, Trasimeno) and in the southern territories of the Kingdom of Naples (Terra di Lavoro). The registers are held in the relevant State Archives.
- Ecclesiastical / Parish Civil Status and Papal Restoration (1815–1870): In the historical provinces of the Holy See, with the Restoration of 1815, secular civil status was suspended and the registration of births (baptisms), marriages, and deaths returned to being managed exclusively by parish registers until 1870.
- Bourbon Civil Status (1809–1865): In force in the territories of southern Lazio that belonged to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (former Province of Terra di Lavoro: districts of Gaeta and Sora, such as Cassino, Sora, Gaeta, Formia, Minturno). Drawn up in duplicate.
- Italian Civil Status (from 1866 / 1870–1871): Started in 1866 in the former Bourbon and Abruzzo territories, and extended to Rome and the papal provinces between 1870 and 1871 after the Capture of Rome.
- Provincial Reorganization of 1927 and 1934: With Royal Decree January 2, 1927, no. 1, the provinces of Frosinone, Rieti, and Viterbo were established ex novo, while with Royal Decree-Law October 4, 1934, no. 1682, the Province of Littoria (now Latina) was created.
- Parish and Diocesan Sources: Baptism, marriage, and burial registers preserved in parishes and Diocesan Archives, whose historical boundaries often differ from present-day provinces and regions.
